A basic quilt has three layers: the top, batting, and the back.
Otherwise known as a sandwich.
All three layers are held together by the quilting which is stitched
through all three layers. As soon as it is quilted, a binding which
covers the raw edges of the quilt is hand-stitched into place.
Care of your quilt
To assure generations of use, some extra care is needed to
preserve your quilt. Here are a few suggestions:
Storing:
1. Place quilt in a 100% cotton unbleached muslin or cotton pillow
case or use the quilt storage bag provided for you by Quilted
Heirlooms. Avoid sharp creases by using acid-free tissue paper to
soften your folds.
2. Be sure the quilt in a dry, even temperature place out of direct
sunlight. No basements, please! Do not store directly on wood, the
natural oils in the wood can stain the fabric.
3. Air out and refold once a year.
Washing/Airing out:
1. Usually an airing out is all a quilt really needs. To do this, put it
either on a spare bed for a few days or outside flat on the ground in
the shade on a fresh summer day. For both processes, make sure
you lay a sheet underneath and on top of the quilt. This will prevent
“critter” damage. A wide railing would work as well.
2. To wet wash your quilt, place a little mild soap in your washing
machine, add the quilt and gently agitate it by hand. Spin and rinse
the quilt. To dry, place flat or on a wide railing on white towels.
Cover with a sheet and if indoors direct a fan on low speed at the
quilt to keep the air moving.
3. You can spot treat a quilt with a paste of Biz and water and
vacuum it off with the brush attachment once it is dry.
